Welcome to Art and Whimsy

This is the first post in my new blog on the type of art I know best, whimsical children’s art. I use whimsical in a rather broad way to describe children’s art. The illustrations that fill my career can be categorized as juvenile, cute (cutesy), kid-friendly, youthful, whimsical, or simply fun. I may write about historic children’s art, current trends, the nature of the publishing industry, and the sheer joy of smiling while I draw. Other times I might wax philosophical as I explain why I do what I do and the benefit I believe it gives those for whom I do it. Of course I hope to create interest in my services as a freelance illustrator, but I also hope I create as much appreciation for the legacy of humor, whimsy, and hope reflected in the best of children directed art.

I hope you join me for the ride. I certainly would like feedback, and dialogue, but the comment section of this site has been closed, due to spam bots. I can still be contacted via email if you simply click on the big blue Contact Me button. For this inaugural entry I submit one of my pieces for a quick look at my work. I use a variety of styles, and I’m hired to illustrate materials from pre-school through high school. Mostly I create art for primary to middle school levels (books, curriculum, activity books, posters, magazines, et. al. ) Next time I’ll say something about the purpose and validity of humorous, or less than serious art for children’s books and educational material.
